Stroke Recovery Stories: Pat’s Progress Update After 5 1/2 Months of Rehabilitation and Home Therapy

Pat is a stroke survivor and existing Flint Rehabilitation customer – this is her story!

Hi my name is Pat and I had a stroke 5 and ½ months ago in January of 2019.

I had it and when I first had it, I could not move my right left and my right arm and the right side of my mouth. So I had trouble speaking where people could understand me and trouble swallowing and chewing at first. I slowly started improving and I had therapy three times a week and then two times and week and then one time.

I’m in therapy right now one time a week and I was in the hospital one month and then in outpatient therapy I also bought this FitMi program. I started using it faithfully everyday and I’m still using it but not as often since I’m doing kind of real life things for therapy now.

What I like about it is, I’m a nurse and I read a lot about stroke when I first came home. And I learned that with stroke you need neuroplasticity which means the brain is rerouting its nerves. It requires a lot of repetition and that’s what this involves – you can work on your hands, your arms, your leg, or your core and it’s easy to use. It’s motivating and it tracks your progress.

I really like it, it’s an easy program to do. You can manipulate, tap or step on these different pucks according to the very easy instructions and it has a little video at the beginning of each one showing you how to do it – but most of them you don’t really need it.

When I first started there were a couple exercises I actually had to wrap an ace bandage around and do this for instance because I didn’t have enough strength to hold it. I still don’t have enough strength to push down but most of the exercises I can do and I really like it.

It’s really been helpful for me so I’ve recovered very quickly. A lot of strokes are different, I realize mine is quicker than most and every stroke is different but I’m very happy with my progress and I think this is a big part of it.

Thanks!
