How Are Physical Therapy Programs Different

Doctors and nurses are highly visible members of the medical community, but the health care field requires many other members in order to run fluidly. Physical therapists contribute to the recovery process for patients, helping them to resume normal activities and heal more quickly.

Many people confuse physical therapists with massage therapists. Many of the techniques appear similar but in reality are very different. Physical therapy is offered to patients who are suffering from a medical condition, rather than for relaxation. The diagnosis is used in conjunction with the medical background to create a treatment plan that aids the body in healing itself more effectively. Improved mobility, range of motion and reduced pain are also important goals for physical therapy.

These treatments are generally limited in duration to the period of time that the recovery is taking place. This treatment is often paid for by health insurance plans and is considered to be of proven medical value. More than five million patients receive physical therapy each week in the United States. Licensed physical therapists can work out of doctors’ offices and hospital, but are also able to practice in sports medicine facilities, residential homes for the elderly and disabled and have private offices.

Physical therapy and physiotherapy are both commonly used terms for this branch of the health care field. Physiotherapists are trained in special physical therapy programs, sometimes offered by special physical therapy schools but also offered by larger universities. Another possible choice is to register with an online school. This enables students to take many of the classes from home. Distance education is a valuable option for students returning to school after taking off time to work or raise a family.

Most physical therapy programs take three years of full time study to complete. A bachelor’s degree is generally required to begin the program, although there are exceptions where it can be started after three years of undergraduate classes. There are also schools that bring students in directly from high school.

The training required to pass the state licensing exams is rigorous. Another option for students who aspire to this field is the physical therapy assistant training. Selecting this path enables students to acquire hands on experience in the field before going on to finish a complete physiotherapy degree.

Mandatory coursework includes a wide range of soft and hard sciences ranging from biology to sociology, giving graduates a thorough education. Clinical experiences play a large role in the training with half a year required in the workplace before commencement.

It is important to take the time to carefully research your options before committing to a school. Accreditation is a basic requirement, as graduates of non-accredited programs are unable to sit for the licensing exams. Selecting a program with a high rate of passing scores and a strong job placement program are also important. Additionally, choosing a school that has financial aid and extracurricular activities are important to many students.

If you look carefully at the available physical therapy schools, you will be able to find one that best meets your needs. With a few years of education, you will be able to find a job helping patients live better lives. physical therapy programs to enhance their practice and capability in dealing with patients.
